KNOXVILLE ZOO

3500 Zoo Drive at Chilhowee Park

But you can't leave them. The Knoxville Zoo already has its hands full caring for (at last count) 815 animals of 230 species.

An ongoing $18 million construction program will eventually redo 30 percent of the 53-acre zoological park. Last year saw the unveiling of Black Bear Falls, a habitat for the state's native bears that includes five waterfalls, two streams and a 36-foot-tall manmade tree. By the time construction is completed in 2004, there will also be new habitats for the African elephants and the reptile collection, plus a new children's playground and petting zoo.

Runners-up: Celebration Station and Dollywood
