WINNER
GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
* There's just something about the Smoky Mountains. Maybe it's the fact that the smoky air there isn't caused by eight lanes of interstate, a parade of automobiles and endless construction. Maybe it's the reminder that a long time ago there used to be a lot of trees everywhere. Maybe it's Maybelline.
But whatever it is, it's something. The immense variety of protected wildlife, the scattered residue of Southern Appalachian mountain culture and the densely foliated 800 square miles of forest found in the Smokies make it easy to understand why it's the new winner of this category.
